    HCCC’s Craft Garden is home to nearly 100 plant species, each cultivated for craft. Spanning the fabric of human existence, craft is an active dialogue with living materials. String, baskets, textiles, dye, pigment, paper—all are made with plants! Learn more about the flora of this unique urban ecosystem at Craft Garden Tours, facilitated by volunteer gardener and former resident artist Molly Koehn (mah-lee kayn). Garden Tours are held quarterly, highlighting each season’s growth and changes. Molly also coordinates garden gatherings, community-based learning sessions held on the last Saturday of the month (except December) at 10:30 AM in the Craft Garden. 713-529-4848

    The Menil Collection

    "John Akomfrah: The Hour Of The Dog" is an immersive, six-channel video installation by the British artist Sir John Akomfrah. The work, co-commissioned by the Menil Collection and the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), explores the history of youth-led Civil Rights–era activism in the American South from 1954 to 1963, and how the participants fought for racial equity through nonviolent marches, protests, boycotts, and voter registration efforts. Runtime: 51 minutes. "The Hour Of The Dog" begins every hour on the hour. The final screening each day starts one hour before closing. 7135259400

    Vian Sora (b. 1976, Baghdad) creates dazzling, layered abstractions that channel the turbulence of life, ancient Mesopotamian history, and Iraq's diverse natural landscapes. For Sora, the multilayered effects of her paintings give a concrete form to the chaos of life. For its expanded display at AST, 'Outerworlds' will feature Sora's paintings in dialogue with works by sculptor John Chamberlain and painter Etel Adnan. (713) 496-9901

    Nevine Mahmoud unearths uncanny worlds from stone: jumbo-sized fruits drip with glass, a contorted marble faun arcs like an acrobat, and children's toys are immortalized in white alabaster.     Discover the magic of enameling in this beginner-friendly workshop, where you’ll create several finished copper samples that can be transformed into pendants or earrings! Enameling is a centuries-old technique of fusing powdered glass onto metal, creating glossy, durable, and often colorful surfaces. This process is popular for jewelry, vessels, and decorative objects, with different enameling methods producing a variety of colors, patterns, and textures. The result is a unique piece that reflects the maker’s creativity and craftsmanship. This workshop is beginner friendly; no previous metalsmithing experience is needed.
