“Hope is a Discipline” opens Friday, June 12, at the Community Artists’ Collective, 4111 Fannin, Suite 100A, with a reception at 6 p.m. Works by Li(sa E.) Harris, Lovie Olivia, Josie Pickens, Tay Butler, Mich Stevenson and Zsavon Butler trace the realities of Black life shaped by surveillance, control and abandonment. Co-curators Josie Pickens and Tay Butler have outlined care, resistance and imagination as ways to move toward liberation, connection and becoming freer and more whole. Grand Central Park invites the public to “Share the Joy, Give a Toy” by making a donation during the community’s annual toy drive, Dec. 1-10. New unwrapped toys can be dropped off at The Lake House, 1039 Lake House Drive, or The Finding Place, 750 Grand Central Parkway in Conroe. Donations can be dropped off daily at The Lake House between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Toys will also be accepted at The Finding Place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
