Carved Ceramic Bowls Workshop

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft Uploaded by María-Elisa Heg
Explore the decorative pottery technique of sgraffito with ceramic artist Gabo Martinez! Find inspiration in her solo exhibition, "Gabo Martinez: The Land of Flowers," featuring ceramics and printmaking, then make your own sgraffito-decorated bowls. Sgraffito (from the Italian “to scratch”) is a pottery decorating technique achieved by applying layers of color (underglazes or colored slips) to leather-hard pottery, then scratching through the layers to create contrasting images, patterns, and textures which reveal the clay color underneath. Participants will learn the basics of sgraffito as they design a decorative pattern that will be carved into two premade bowls.
