The Alley Theatre is the grand dame of Houston theaters. Easily the most visible theater in the city, the downtown institution offers new plays and classics alike in two facilities: the 824-seat Hubbard Stage and the 310-seat Neuhaus Stage. It's one of the country's few theaters to support an entire company -actors, designers and craftspeople - full-time, throughout the year. Even those who don't go for theater have likely seen a production at the Alley - and they've likely enjoyed it, as well.
In celebration of Theater District Open House, the Press took a look behind the curtain at the people and programs that contribute to the gem known as the Houston Theater District. Da Camera's A Little Day Music offers a free lunchtime concert in the grand foyer of Wortham Theater Center each month with chamber music and jazz musicians.
Workshopped last year at the Alley All New Festival, Bekah Brunstetter's warm, somewhat fragrant The Cake is certifiably ripped-from-today's-headlines. How timely is it? So prescient that its impact is already muted. On Monday, June 4, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in favor of a Christian Colorado baker who refused...
Our Houston theaters celebrate the holiday season as if everyone expects a foot of snow. There are religious-themed plays, secular put-downs, lots of Dickens, snow-encrusted musicals, and then there are shows that have nothing whatever to do with Santa, elves, or fruit cake, just plain old entertainment for the shopping...
The Houston Symphony is presenting an all-Mozart program this Thanksgiving weekend and the Alley is digging into the spirit of Christmas past to bring us this season's holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Zaniness is afoot with Spontaneous Smattering's overnight playwriting extravaganza and, if you're in the mood for quirky, check...
If you're under the impression that kids' poetry can't be judged, then you might want to stay away from the Alley Theatre this Friday night, when teenage students from schools across Houston will take the stage to perform original slam poetry and compete in the Slam Poets @ Alley Theatre...
In the last 12 years, Alley Theatre company member Chris Hutchison has been in A Christmas Carol 11 times. Multiply that by about 50 performances a year and you’re up to 550 times onstage in professional performances running through the same script. This year Hutchison is back as Bob Cratchit,...
Everything old is new again, and especially with TUTS' production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. This updated classic sparkles and shines, so get thee to the Hobby Center because this weekend is your last chance to be beguiled. We've also got Internet sensation Puddles (the sad...
Houston makes national news all the time. Sometimes it's our sports teams, sometimes it's the happenings over at NASA, a breakthrough at the Medical Center or our atrocious weather that's in the headlines. And sometimes it's Houston murders. Here are four Houston murders that made news and, in three cases,...
The set up: Two years ago, Ira Glass, host of the beloved and popular public radio show “This American Life”, sent the Internet into a tailspin and flung the arts community into a horrified, head shaking tempest. The offense? Glass, after seeing a production of King Lear starring John Lithgow,...
